Griots: the rhapsodes of Africa

Agni Stroumpouli, Fairy tale narrator

This workshop is held in collaboration with the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation

Ages: 4th, 5th και 6th grade

Duration: 2 meetings, 90 minutes each

Griot are modern day storytellers, living in the sub-Saharan countries of western Africa. Griot are the memory of their society’s tradition (history, fairy tales, songs, music), seeing as they perpetuate tradition through the culture of orality. Children will initially watch the film “Liana” by Aaron Kopp and Amanda Kopp. Then, through discussion with the students, the workshop will highlight the functions of a Griot in his environment, and will examine the life of children in said environment. Furthermore, the workshop will highlight the characteristics of the culture of orality, which is an important element of our own tradition, too.
