Duration: 80 minutes
Have you ever considered the extent to which representations of gender on screen represent reality? Students of this workshop will get acquainted with the work of noted scholars such as Laura Mulvey, Richard Dyer, and Judith Butler, in order to understand gender as a cultural and social construct (differentiated from biological sex), and to become informed about political movements such as feminism. Then, through a series of film excerpts, they will discuss and examine the ways in which gender is represented not only in Hollywood films, but also in independent American and European cinema. Aim of this workshop is to encourage students to examine whether the notions of gender are culturally predefined and to which extent, and whether they are related to social and cultural representations of gender on the big screen.
