Matti is 11 years old and dreams of a family vacation in his father’s native country, Finland. He manages to get what he wants by telling a whopping lie. But once they get there, Matti, his younger brother Sami and his parents find themselves without a place to stay, no money and no car in the middle of Finnish wasteland. Only a miracle can save them – or Uncle Jussi, who has been struggling to compete with Matti’s father his whole life.
He was born in Detmold, studied directing at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. His first full-length feature film Solange du hier bist premiered during the Cinéastes du présent competition at the film festival in Locarno in 2006 where it received a special mention. Solange du hier bist won more prizes worldwide (Terrassa, Turin, Lisbon, Golden Lola). In 2008, he received the sponsorship prize from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. His documentary film Detlef, about the life story of the gay rights activist Detlef Stoffel, premiered at the Berlinale in 2012. The following year, the Berlinale screened his feature film Lose your head as a world premiere in the category of Panorama.
