An anti-war masterpiece by Carlos Saura, which transports the viewer to the childhood memories of the 89-year-old director, forged by the death, desolation and suffering of the Spanish Civil War. He made the film to evoke and purify these memories and to awaken society, because, as he told reporters, "unfortunately there is a risk of a new civil war in Spain today". The film's poignant images are highlighted by a song by the famous Aragonese singer-songwriter, poet and political activist José Antonio Laborteta.
