FEATURE FILM JURY

Rationale

The 25th Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People had us travel in a rich world of film enjoyment, reflection and emotion. We watched many films from different areas of this planet, with various subjects that present today's world.
The 12 feature films of this year's selection talk about the main issues of our times with subtlety and honesty. The social inequality and the harshness of authority still are not addressed and they crush people. People are pushed to abandond their homes, their families and their places.
Accidents and maladies are an allegory for a suffering world. Even love is hidden in the background and is not offered as a resolution. However, children and youth try to find their way and dream even through soccer, music and cinema. The only resilient thing, after all, is the relationships and bonds among us people.

Rationale

Homer, today, lives in Pyrgos. And he invites us on a journey where each short film is an island. Islands where monsters and fairies, gods and mermaids live. Where we live adventures, our legs tremble with fear and we marvel at the immense human capacity to imagine the impossible. Being lucky enough to experience this journey from movie to movie is an immeasurable privilege. So much so, that unlike Ulysses who dreamed of returning home, we would stay sailing forever.

A lucid, elegant and defiant naughty film, with an exquisite precision, where everything happens at the right time and with just the right measure. A necessary and up-to-date history lesson. A film for children, but not childish. The child's finger pointing out that the emperor is naked. Good cinema that demonstrates talent and intelligence, and that reminds us to beware of the wolf.

KIDS & DOCS JURY

Rationale

The Kids and Docs Jury had the opportunity to watch many wonderful films from very different contexts and countries, addressing relevant social issues but at the same time devoting a high attention to each character's personal life and gaze. The Jury decided to focus on films that would have one main point in common: the aim to recognise the protagonists' dignity, and to give them a strong voice to express their concerns as well as their dreams for the future, by approaching them without any prejudices.

Other criteria the Jury followed were the visual qualities and the way the story develops throughout the films. The Kids and Docs Jury finally recognised the value of a multifaceted and insightful representation of inter-generational relationships in the films.

It is a film inspired from real life dealing with the issue of drugs. It had deep feelings and touched on the subject of love between two brothers. It also showed how the same pain is experienced by three different "ages". Well shot with nice shots, good cinematography and music suited for a children's film. And all this made us cry in the end.

With his scenes, he makes the viewer experience the emotional charge of a sensitive subject without prejudices. Because "storms" are not just those they talking in the news about.
