Contemporary Trends in European Animation: Slovakia

Martin Smatana, a distinguished member of the new generation of Slovak animation, curates a tribute of ten films from the recent production of this very active country, animation-wise. The films are aimed at both children and adults and cover a wide range of styles and themes.

Martin Smatana

He was born in Slovakia in 1991. He finished his master degree in Animation at FAMU, Prague. During his bachelor studies he completed an internship in Nukufilm studio in Tallinn, Estonia. For 5 years he was leading workshops of animation for children. His debut film "Rosso Papavero" was premiered at Berlinale 2015 Generation Kplus and won 13 international awards. His graduation film "The Kite" was premiered at Berlinale 2019, selected to semifinals of Student Academy Awards, included in the Film Collection of MoMA and won over 60 international awards.
