Amsterdam, 1961. Thomas, 9 years old, along with his sister and mother, is suppressed by his strictly religious father. Thanks to his vivid imagination, Thomas finds ways to escape from this oppressive reality. In the end, with the help of his imaginary friend “Jesus” and his liberal-minded neighbor, Mrs. Van Amersfoort, he dares to rebel against his father. Happiness begins when you stop being afraid.

Ineke Houtman

She makes feature films and television programs. Scratches in the Table, Pollekeand The Indian were shown at many festivals, including Berlin, and received several awards. Scratches in the Table Scratches in the Table was the official Dutch entry for the Oscars. My Grandpa the Bank Robber, Then Happiness was Common and The Escape all received a Golden Film award. In addition to making feature films, Ineke also directed series such as Doctor Deen and Zwarte Tulp. Her previous production is the telefilm Mates, which received the children's jury prize at both the Cinekid Festival and the Barnefilmfestivalen in Kristiansand, Norway.
