Once upon a time, there was a little girl who, even when out and about, was always distracted. Eyes fixed on her phone, she didn’t notice the world around her or anyone who wanted to play. What could be done to “disoccupy” her eyes?

André Carrilho

Over a 30-year career, he has earned more than 100 awards in illustration, editorial cartooning, animation, and caricature, showcasing his work worldwide in both solo and group exhibitions. His art has appeared in notable publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Diário de Notícias. Carrilho received the prestigious Society for News Design Gold Award in 2002, and his ebola cartoon went viral in 2015, winning the Grand Prize at World Press Cartoon. That same year, he was invited to create a caricature mural for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. In 2020, he published The girl with the occupied eyes, a picture book that won the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal and became a finalist at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Carrilho also co-founded Video Jack, a multimedia VJing project, publishes weekly editorial cartoons in Diário de Notícias, and producies animated editorial cartoons for RTP Notícias.
