Saturday, 29 November 2025: Workshops for Educators
10:00-13:00 “Talking with Primary School Students about Audiovisual Literacy”, Kostas Voros, Educator / Researcher
This workshop is addressed to primary school teachers and focuses on the key concepts, pedagogical practices, and possibilities for integrating Audiovisual Literacy into the school curriculum. Through experiential exercises and examples drawn from the Skills Labs, participants will explore ways of engaging children in discussions on issues such as their everyday contact with media, online bullying, misinformation, mobile phone use, artificial intelligence, and video games — maintaining a balance between critical analysis and creative expression.
Dr Kostas Voros is a primary-school teacher who has taught across all levels of education — from early years to higher education — mainly in the United Kingdom, where he lived and worked for 20 years. He graduated from the University of Crete (Department of Primary Education) and holds an M.Ed. in Education and the Mass Media (University of Manchester) and a PhD in Media Education (Institute of Education – University College London). He has conducted research and published articles on Media Education and Audiovisual Literacy, and has presented his work at numerous conferences and seminars.
14:00-17:00 “Sexuality Education and LGBTQ+ Issues Go to the Movies at School” Mary Chioni, Sexuality and LGBTQ+ Education Trainer / Author
Using as starting points (a) film screenings at school, (b) current public discourse highlighting issues such as sexuality, gender-based violence, bullying (both physical and online), pornography, sexual diversity, hate speech and abusive language, (c) the fact that students are either viewers or (co-)creators of various kinds of school films, and (d) the reality that the school environment functions as a system comprising four groups (students, teachers, parents/caregivers, and school staff) with its own rules and dynamics, the workshop — through experiential methods and group-process techniques — will offer strategies for developing skills to manage situations that may arise when films addressing themes of Sexuality Education and/or LGBTQ+ issues are screened or produced within the school community.
Mary Chioni is a trainer in sexuality and LGBTQ+ education with many years of experience in public education. She has served as Head of Health Education at the Directorate of Secondary Education of Athens A and was a member of the scientific team of the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) for the Skills Labs. A graduate of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Faculty of Philosophy, M.A. in Health Promotion & Education), she has also trained at the Athenian Centre for the Study of Man (AKMA) in systemic thinking, therapy, and group process. She has authored educational materials and book chapters on comprehensive sexuality education and has trained students, teachers, parents, health professionals, and the wider public. She collaborates scientifically with the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) and Orlando LGBT+ – Mental Health Without Stigma.

Through this initiative, we aim to reach thousands of students across Central and Southeastern Europe, helping them to expand their knowledge of European cinema.
