In a den in the fells, a polar bear gives birth to a cub –but the cub is stillborn. In a cabin some way off, a woman gives birth to a strong, healthy boy. The polar bear is so grief-stricken at the loss of her cub that she lies down on the ice to die, so her mate steals the woman’s baby and takes him out onto the ice. The little boy is raised by the she-bear, learning all the skills a bear requires… This is the beginning of a beautiful fairytale…

Jannik Hastrup

He was born in Denmark in 1941 and began his career as a musician of jazz, and also involved in pottery. When he turned to film making he was committed to cinema completely in animation, directing movies and teaching his art in several universities. In the 60s and the '70s he directed and made production on about 60 short films while from early 80s has focused on production of feature films.
