April in France / April en France
France, 76', 2023
age recommendation: 10+
original language: French, English
April, a 5-year-old English girl, moves to Paris just before the first lockdown and feels isolated in her new home, longing to return to London. When restrictions ease, her father takes her to Labastide d’Armagnac, a quiet village in southern France where they inherit her great-grandfather's house. At first, April remains unhappy but gradually explores the village. She visits her great-grandfather's grave, talks to him, and believes he might return. As she meets her great-grandfather’s friends, April opens up, discovering herself and transforming the adults around her. The film beautifully captures the magic of early childhood, emphasizing empathy, art, and intergenerational connection in shaping a child’s mind.
